The Department of Homeland Security announced the issuance of a new rule last week, allowing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to give asylum applications to their asylum officers for approval. Previously, only immigration judges in the Justice Department oversaw asylum applications, but that process has resulted in lengthy court cases that can take years per application.
“The current system for handling asylum claims at our borders has long needed repair,” said Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Through this rule, we are building a more functional and sensible asylum system to ensure that individuals who are eligible will receive protection more swiftly, while those who are not eligible will be rapidly removed.”
